Challenges
As a 24x7x365 Web retailer and distributor, the FragranceNet.com IT team has up-time on their minds, all the time. To that end, they were charged with implementing a Web site and back-end architecture to guarantee that their online storefront was always open for business.

At the heart of FragranceNet.com’s worries was a single point of failure database that, in the event of a failure, required manual intervention to return to full operation. The challenge was to eliminate the single point of failure and ensure that the FragranceNet.com eCommerce site customers enjoyed 100% uptime.

Solution
Working with the IT team at FragranceNet.com, Invision’s Unix engineers assessed the infrastructure.

Since downtime was simply not an option, the Invision team designed a multi-tiered, fully redundant operations plan and infrastructure that included a three-tier Linux web architecture. To achieve the 24x7x365 goal, an automated rapid-failover process was developed.

Invision upgraded and enhanced the database layer to enable the application-level load balancing of transactions. This allowed FragranceNet.com to scale up to meet the demands on their infrastructure without a massive investment in new hardware. Today, this design is the core backbone for the FragranceNet.com Web site and online storefront.
